Two lines which share a common destination in Horsham in West Sussex, and have links to London’s termini at Victoria and Waterloo. The Sutton & Mole Valley line serves south-west London and parts of Surrey, while the Arun Valley (or Mid Sussex) line branches from the Brighton mainline to join the West Coastway line at picturesque Arundel.
We traversed a short stretch of these lines by car, on our way to visit a particular station and later take in the seaside at Clymping, near Arundel and Littlehampton.
Box Hill & Westhumble Station

We visited this station as it is featured in the introduction to Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys, from about season 5 onwards. It also happens to be a pretty station in its own right — and a quiet one, for a Monday afternoon’s visit. The station is served by Southern and South Western trains to Horsham, south-western London and Surrey. I can also warmly recommend the nearby Stepping Stones pub.
