Stockholm’s commuter rail runs through the city along four principle routes: north and northwest into Uppsala county; south to coastal Nynäshamn; and southwest to Södertälje and Gnesta, in Södermanland. Until 2017 it was almost entirely above-ground; summer that year saw the opening of two new stations, joining Stockholms Södra in serving the city centre from below.

Completed in July 2017, Citybanan is a commuter-rail branch off Sweden’s main north-south lines, with modern stations serving the city centre at Odenplan and under the existing Centralstation.
